Ofure Rey Siakpere, a 38-year-old businessman and pastor, was sentenced to life in prison by an Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on Wednesday, January 19, for defiling and impregnating his 14-year-old in-law
According to the lead state prosecutor, Mrs. Funke Adegoke, the suspect committed the crime in his Lagos home in March 2018. When the crime was committed, he was 35 years old. The survivor testified that while living with the offender and his wife, who was her aunt, she was overpowered and defiled on at least 15 occasions by the convict. He allegedly beat her up whenever she rebuffed his approaches. As a result of the abuse, the victim reported she became pregnant. She had just given birth at the time of her court testimony. Mrs. Adebimpe Siakpere, the convict's wife, testified for the defense.
In his testimony, Siakpere refuted the charge, calling it "false". Justice Abiola Soladoye, on the other hand, jailed the defendant after finding him guilty of defilement in violation of Section 137 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015. She claimed that the prosecution had established all of the elements of the defilement offense. The prosecution witnesses were "compelling," she said.
“The defendant maltreated the victim (his wife’s niece) by defiling her. The conduct of this so called in-law is hurtful and demeaning. Where is the defendant’s humanity and moral compass? This case is a reflection of sexual lawlessness that occurs within the family circle. The defendant must be duly sanctioned in the hope that this will serve as a deterrent to others to not tow the line of sexual misconduct.
The defendant Ofure Siakpere, is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment with no option of fine. His name shall also be registered in the Sex Offenders Register as maintained by the Lagos State Government,” she said.
