In a country where it’s easy to get away with stealing millions of naira or just going a few jail terms, it is reasonable to question the sentencing of a man to death for the theft of N14, 570
In what can be described as a mind boggling justice, one David Olugboyega, has been convicted and sentenced to death by hanging for robbing three people of the sum of N14, 570, on March 20, 2003, at Araromi Street, Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, reported Tribune.
The sentence was handed down on the accused by an Ado Ekiti High Court on December 3, by the presiding judge, Justice John Adeyeye, who averred that the prosecution had proven its case beyond any doubt that the convict was guilty of robbery while using a cutlass.
In delivering his judgement, Adeyeye said:
"An accused may be convicted on his own confession alone as long as the court was satisfied. Based on the confessional statement of the accused, the court found him guilty as charged.
Besides, the prosecution has also proved his case beyond reasonable doubt by providing seven witnesses.
The accused is hereby sentenced to death by hanging. This will serve as deterrent to others in the society. May God have mercy on your soul."
The prosecutor, Alaba Adeyemi, had told the court that the convict, armed with weapons including a gun and a cutlass, robbed three people, Kola Owolabi of N8,000, Beatrice Olawumi, N5,000 and Idowu Abiodun, N1,570.
This is surely disturbing and highly irritating
