Police in Northern Niger have detained a mayor after 200kg of cocaine worth $8.7 million was discovered in his official vehicle

According to Reuters, the mayor and his driver, who were in the vehicle at the time, were caught with 199 bricks of cocaine on Sunday, January 2 at a checkpoint on the road leading north out of the desert trading town of Agadez.

The Central Office for the Repression of Illicit Drug Trafficking in Niger (OCRTIS) confirmed the recovery of more than 200 kg of cocaine in Agadez, but did not provide any details.

This follows the seizure in May of 17 tonnes of cannabis resin worth $37 million in the West African country.
