The Department of State Services (DSS) is prohibited from detaining Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), according to an order from a federal capital territory (FCT) high court sitting in Maitama
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), who are listed as defendants, were also included in the restraining order that was issued by M.A. Hassan, the presiding judge, on Thursday. TheCable has previously reported on how a federal high court in Abuja rejected a request by the DSS to detain Emefiele on terrorism-related allegations.
The development comes amid rumors that Emefiele's detention was politically motivated considering the potential effects that the naira's redesign and withdrawal restrictions may have on vote-buying in the 2023 elections.
Different people have had different reactions to the naira redesign and the cash withdrawal policy, and the house of representatives recently expressed concerns over the CBN governor's absence after inviting him to testify before the parliamentarians.
However, the CBN claimed in a letter to the House of Representatives on December 21 that Emefiele was out of the nation taking care of a professional engagement and health issues.
Aisha Ahmad, the CBN deputy governor for financial systems stability, claimed that the policy was not directed against politicians when she spoke before the parliament on December 22.
The maximum weekly limit for withdrawals by individuals and business organizations through all channels has now been increased by the CBN to N500,000 and N5 million, respectively.
