NLC reacts as Governors recommend sacking of workers above 50 years

Following their recommendation for early retirement of civil officials from age 50 and above, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday invited all Nigerian governors and holders of public office, including politicians, to resign as a show of solidarity

The governors have reportedly recommended early retirement for civil officials who are 50 years old and older as a cure to reposition the country's devastated economy, according to Leadership Newspaper.

The national president of the NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, wrote a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja in which he stated that the congress is appalled by the governors' recommendations and characterized the action as reeking of excessive greed and insane brutality.

According to Comrade Wabba, the greatest approach to guarantee a stronger economy is for the government to take firm action to prevent and punish corruption, waste, poor management, and mismanagement in the petroleum industry. According to him, the governors' calls for the early termination of public employee appointments for those over 50 remain a blatant violation of their employment contracts and an active legal requirement.

We find this repugnant, shameful and utterly irresponsible, aside from running contrary to your mission and principle of creating 100 million jobs (aside from poverty intervention schemes), this policy is clear invitation to anarchy and damnation. Those promoting this idea should be treated as enemies of your government. The implementation of this proposal will lead to the sacking of almost a quarter of the public sector workforce, the decapitation of that workforce through the retrenchment of its most experienced layer, and the intensification of poverty and misery among citizens”, Wabba said.
