Heavy security presence at Dowen College

Heavy security presence at Dowen College

Following speculations that the Lagos State government may soon reopen Dowen College in Lekki amid the controversy surrounding the death of 11-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, who was allegedly tormented by certain seniors in the institution, security officers have surrounded the school

According to Vanguard, armed police officers with Armoured Personnel Carriers were observed patrolling the school and the hostels located across the street from the main structure.

The presence of security personnel could be linked to threats made by certain Niger Delta youths to launch a demonstration against the school's reopening.

It was previously reported that on January 6, demonstrators wearing branded solidarity shirts, presumed to be Ijaw indigenes, gathered at the school's gate to demand that it remain closed.

Following the death of one of its students, 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, the school was closed in December.

Some senior pupils at the institution allegedly beat and fed him a poisonous substance. Dowen College refuted this, claiming that Oromoni was injured while playing football at school.

The Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution acquitted five students and five staff members of the school involved to Oromoni's death in January.

The DPP Director, Adetutu Oshinusi, revealed that septicaemia, lobar pneumonia with acute pyelonephritis, pyomyositis of the right ankle, and acute bacteria pneumonia due to severe sepsis were the causes of Oromoni's death, according to reports from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and the Central Hospital, Warri.

According to the DPP's legal guidance, there is "no prima facie evidence of murder, involuntary manslaughter, or deliberate giving of poison with intent to damage against the five pupils" based on these facts.
