Mr. Nyakno Uwemedimo Okoibu, Chairman of Ikono Local Government in Akwa-Ibom State, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the area due to the threat of cult-related activities
The daily curfew, which runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., began on Tuesday, December 28th, and will continue until further notice.According to a statement signed by Engr. Nsisong Ntuk, Chief Press Secretary to the Council Chairman, the restriction is necessary to check, halt, stop, or prevent cult-related activities that have resulted in fatalities and property looting in the area.
The statement reads in part, “The chairman of Ikono LGA, has imposed total restrictions of movement of persons, motorcycles, keke, cars, etc. within the perimeters of Ikono Local Government Area, from the hours of 6pm to 6am daily, effective from tomorrow, December 28, 2021, until further notice.
"The ban, though painful, is a child of necessity and is therefore in the overall best interest of every well-meaning indigene of Ikono and other citizens residing in the council area.
"As a responsible government, we cannot fold our arms and watch events go the other way round. We must be proactive.”
The Chairman ordered security operatives to boost the pace of surveillance and monitoring in order to prevent cults from killing people in the local government area and its environs.
He urged residents to work with law enforcement officials by reporting suspicious person movements and providing information that could lead to the arrest of criminal elements in the council area.
